With a focus on The Potteries and Surrounding Areas this well-illustrated two-part Insight, and its illustrated introductory Support Presentation with Presentation Support Notes, was undertaken by Barry J Bridgwood and Ingval Maxwell for COTAC in support of its aim to advance a broader awareness of built heritage matters by those involved in learning, training and educating, including the general public.

It is intended Insight 3 Part 1: Understanding the Region, be read in conjunction with Part 2: Appreciating the Region.

Insight 3: Introductory Presentation

In this illustrated support presentation, the following questions will be considered in relation to The Potteries and Surrounding Areas:

  • What is special and why?
  • Is appearance and appeal important?
  • How does a building work?
  • What needs to be thought about?
  • How does what we do affect the heritage?
Insight 3: Introductory Presentation Support Notes

The Introductory Presentation Support Notes are offered in five Sections, addressing:

  • What is special and why?
  • Is appearance and appeal important?
  • How does a building work?
  • What needs to be thought about?
  • How does what we do affect the heritage?

The combined intention of the set of 32 full page PDF illustrations with these Presentation Support Notes, aims to set the scene in advance of reading Part 1 Understanding the Region. The illustrated topics will be dealt with in greater depth by Part 2 Appreciating the Region, where sets of Information Boxes introduce blocks of Questions for individual self-consideration, whilst also offering indicative Answers.
Insight 3: Part 1: Understanding the Region

Part 1 is offered in nine Sections, addressing:

  • Remaining Issues at the Heart of the Area
  • The Legacy and what might be done
  • What can help make the best decisions?
  • Achieving an Awareness

These 9 well-illustrated Sections combine to cover a wide range of issues that can be identified across the Region.
Insight 3: Part 2: Appreciating the Region

Along with the Introductory Presentation and its Support Notes, Part 2 is offered in five Sections to address in greater detail:

  • What is special and why?
  • Is appearance and appeal important?
  • How does a building work?
  • What needs to be thought about?
  • How does what we do affect the heritage?

A succession of Information Boxes support the illustrated texts whilst also including a series of Part 2 Section Questions aimed at developing a deeper awareness of the issues involved. This Part 2 also builds upon any preliminary learning undertaken as part of using the similarly named 5 Units offered by COTAC’s Insight 1.
